Oracle weighs serious offer for Apple

Published on .

Oracle Corp. has been seriously considering making a bid for Apple Computer, according to executives familiar with Oracle. Apple, responding to reports of merger talks with Sun Microsystems, issued a statement on Feb. 8 that it is "not currently in merger discussions." An Oracle/Apple merger has been mentioned before, "but in the last few weeks the possibility has become front-burner for [Oracle Chairman] Larry Ellison," said one executive.

Separately, Apple Senior VP-Corporate Marketing Satjiv Chahil told Advertising Age that BBDO Worldwide, Los Angeles, "is very much our agency." He wouldn't rule out exploring other options. McCann-Erickson Worldwide Chairman John Dooner denied rumors he recently spent two days at Apple in talks on the account.
