NPD Group's released highlights of the latest PC-Meter Sweeps, a quarterly listing of the Top 50 Web sites among U.S. home PC users. Among the top 10 most trafficked Web sites in order are: Netscape, America Online, Yahoo!, WebCrawler, Excite, Infoseek, Lycos, Prodigy, Digital Equipment Corp.'s Alta Vista and AOL's Global Network Navigator. Big gainers in audience include MSNBC, Olympic-oriented Web sites and personal home page offerings. Sites whose traffic grew largely due to interest in Olympic-related content include: NBC (ranked 27th), AT&T (ranked 29th), CNN (ranked 31st), IBM (ranked 43rd) and the International Olympic Committee (olympic.org) (ranked 48th)..
Corporate/technical and news/entertainment domains were the two fastest growing domain categories in the quarter. Led by Microsoft, the corporate/technical categoy garnered a 44 percent reach. Fueled by Olympic sites and MSNBC, news and entertainment sites secured a 54 percent reach.
Additionally, sixteen of the top 25 sites are shared among three demographic groups--men over 18, women over 18 and children. Kids had five top 25 sites that did not appear in the adult top 25 listings including: MTV, Disney, the Tripod site, the Independence Day movie tie-in site and Internet access provider Primenet.
