Nigel Stapleton, 49, to co-chairman, Reed Elsevier, London, from chief financial officer. He succeeds Ian Irvine, 59, who is retiring from executive duties. Mr. Irvine will continue as chairman of Reed International until April 1997, when Mr. Stapleton will succeed to that post. Herman Bruggink, the other co-chairman at Reed Elsevier, continues in that post.

Larry Kirshbaum, 52, adds the title chairman, Time Warner Trade Publishing, a vacant post, to that of president-CEO, Time Inc.'s Warner Books.

John Clinton to exec VP-general manager, J. Walter Thompson USA, Chicago, from president-CEO, J. Walter Thompson Canada, Toronto. He succeeds J. Steve Davis, who left. Ted Nation, formerly general manager, J. Walter Thompson Chile, Santiago, succeeds Mr. Clinton.

Charles L. Nesbit Jr., 40, to president, Sara Lee Corp.'s Bali Co., Winston-Salem, N.C., from senior VP-general manager, Bali's Mass Market Business Division.

Michael Burns, 40, adds the title vice chairman, Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising, New York, a new post, to that of core group director on the General Mills account.

Mark Pfefferkorn to president-chief operating officer, Harmon Smith, Kansas City, Mo., from VP. Also: Mary McPherson to VP from administration director, and Jeff Kirtley to VP from account group director.

Martyn Straw to president, Interbrand Schechter, New York, from co-managing partner, N.W. Ayer & Partners. He succeeds to duties formerly held by Charles Brymer, who retains the CEO title.
