Michael Kelly, currently Washington editor of The New Yorker, will become the next editor of The New Republic, succeeding Andrew Sullivan, who left the post in April. Mr. Kelly will make the shift after the November elections.

Catherine Silver to VP-sales, Red Herring magazine, San Francisco, from head of worldwide sales at Variety. She will manage all advertising and sponsorship programs for the technology and entertainment business monthly as well as Herring Events and herring.com.

Linda Colleran to senior VP-media director, Foote, Cone & Belding, Los Angeles, where she will handle media for Mazda and other agency clients, from media director, Oglivy & Mather.

Mike Debartolo, most recently U.S. global advertising director at Reader's Digest, to national sales manager of Glamour, New York.

BBDO Detroit promoted Cheryl Assenmacher, Kerry Ann Doyle and Amy Kahn to senior account execs from account execs.

Eleanor Safie was promoted to account supervisor from account exec at Young & Rubicam, Detroit. Also promoted was Gerald Schmidt from art director to senior art director.
