Universal McCann, the media arm of McCann-Erickson Worldwide, hired Sean Cunningham, 39, as exec VP-media director of the New York office. Mr. Cunningham held the same position at sister Interpublic Group of Cos. agency Lowe Lintas & Partners Worldwide. Mark Stewart, Universal McCann's exec VP- North American media director, has been handling the duties of the New York media team. The new appointment frees Mr. Stewart to concentrate on North America business. In his new post, Mr. Cunningham will be responsible for more than $2 billion worth of media spending. Universal McCann's billings in North America are about $5 billion. Before working at Lowe Lintas, Mr. Cunningham was media director at Ammirati & Puris, and in 1994 he established Ammirati Puris Lintas' Toronto media department, which he ran for two years.

Ray Gillette, 51, to president of agency operations, DDB Worldwide, Chicago, from president of integrated services and head of Beyond DDB. The position had been vacant since March, when Dick Rogers was named president of DDB U.S. Mr. Gillette won't be replaced, but Beyond DDB will come under the purview of the Integrated Ventures Group, which also will encompass @DDB and DDB Corbett. The new group, which was announced on July 6, will be headed by Patrice Dermody, 43, who will continue as media director at DDB, Chicago.
