PepsiCo plans $75M Euro consolidation

PepsiCo International is looking to consolidate its European media buying assignments at an agency of record, and is in the preliminary stages of a $75 million review, executives close to PepsiCo said. PepsiCo acknowledged European account activity but didn't provide details about the review. Agencies expected to participate include current PepsiCo shops BBDO Worldwide, DDB Needham Worldwide, J. Walter Thompson Co. and Young & Rubicam.

LPGA Commissioner Charles Mechem torpedoed published remarks about how lesbians are hurting women's golf by noting sponsors' continued strong support for LPGA tournaments. Remarks attributed to veteran CBS golf announcer Ben Wright, and printed Friday in The News Journal of Wilmington, Del., said lesbians are turning off corporate sponsors and that females' breasts are a disadvantage in golf. "This is incredibly overblown," Mr. Mechem told Advertising Age late Friday, noting that in the past five years, event purses have grown 40%; more than 30 companies have signed on as sponsors and licensees; and all but one of the LPGA's events have title sponsors. Mr. Mechem said that since Mr. Wright is denying he made those comments, he wouldn't comment on that aspect until the confusion is cleared up. A spokeswoman for McDonald's Corp., which sponsored the LPGA event here last weekend, affirmed its continued commitment. Other sponsors of LPGA events include McCall's, J.C. Penney Co., Oldsmobile, Chrysler-Plymouth, Nabisco, Sprint, Sara Lee Corp. and Wendy's International.
