PepsiCo, Purchase, N.Y., reported a 9% increase in net income for the second quarter, to $487.2 million. Sales jumped 11% to $7.29 billion. The company's beverage and restaurant units fueled the improvements, with double-digit gains in sales and operating profit. The international segments of those two divisions performed especially well. The snack-food division looked sluggish by comparison, posting a 6% increase in sales and a 3% increase in operating profit. In the restaurant group, Pizza Hut was the star, delivering a 22% increase in sales for the quarter, and a 68% increase in operating profit. Operating profits were down at Taco Bell and KFC.
