Peruvian fast food chain plots expansion

Published on .

LIMA -- Bembos, Peru's answer to Burger King and McDonald's, plans to slow growth at home in 1999 in order to concentrate on expanding in neighboring Latin America countries, according to company spokespeople.

Jacqueline Mayor, general manager of the hamburger chain that has 23 stores in Lima, says Bembos plans to open two new restaurants in Peru in the coming months and is studying the possibility of opening another eight in the next year to 18 months.

But while Bembos is growing slower at home, Ms. Mayor says it is seriously looking at opening outlets in Bolivia and Chile. The new expansion, both at home and abroad, will be through a system of franchises.
