CMG Information Services, backer of several of the Internet's most trafficked sites, this fall will launch Planet Direct, an online content package aimed at Internet service providers. Planet Direct combines offerings from various companies CMG has invested in, including Lycos, GeoCities, Freemark Communications and others. For CMG, the offering is a way to bring together its various investments into one package. CMG will offer Planet Direct free to ISPs and will help sell advertising for them. The goal, said CMG President-CEO David Wetherell, is to help give the ISPs a leg up in the face of increased competition from AT&T and the Baby Bells.CMG will charge 5 cents to 15 cents per impression for advertising, Mr. Wetherell said. Advertisers will be able to use proprietary CMG software to place ads to reach certain demographic and psychographic targets, he said.
