Planet Direct to rival AOL, MSN

Interactive media packager Planet Direct on June 26 launched a free Web-based online service that will be advertising supported, in a move to compete with AOL, MSN and other online services. Planet Direct, a subsidiary of direct marketing company CMG Services in Andover, Mass., has partnered with more than 70 Internet service providers to offer the free service to subscribers across the country. Content includes news, entertainment, community services and other Web-based information, as well as personalized product and service offers from advertisers. Planet Direct has signed up national advertisers including American Express, Black and Decker, ZD Net and others.
