Grupo Televisa is run by the third-generation Emilio Azcarraga, who undertook a much-needed restructuring of the company he inherited from his father nine years ago. The network's four channels dominate up to 70% of the country's viewers and TV advertising. Already a major shareholder in the leading U.S. Hispanic network Univision, Televisa has joined one of several groups preparing bids to buy Univision.

TV Azteca started in 1993 when Mexican retail billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego bought a government-owned TV network. Azteca's two national channels have managed to capture just over 30% of Mexico's viewers and TV ad dollars. Mr. Salinas is trying to pull off the same feat in the U.S. Hispanic market with 5-year-old Azteca America but is only up to a 5% share of the Spanish-language U.S. TV market so far.
