A day after the Federal Trade Commission said Congress should act to preserve privacy of social security numbers and other information from consumers, there is a move to include the protection as part of the budget reconciliation to be acted on by Congress this week. Aides to Sen. Richard Bryan (D., Nev.) said they hope to have the measure included in the legislation that must pass this week before Congress recesses for the fall campaigns. Marketing groups have generally been wary, fearing restrictions could significantly affect their ability to compile mailing lists.
