Prodigy Services Co. this summer will start a major campaign to move its troubled online service to the Web.
The new Prodigy will start testing late this quarter or early in the third quarter, said William Lansing, chief operating officer. It will include new content areas, such as a hip virtual community called Stim.
A CRUCIAL MOVE
Prodigy President Ed Bennett said moving to the Web is crucial for the service's survival.
"You either bet on the Internet or you say online services are going to win," he said, adding that he's voting for the Internet.
Prodigy must work quickly--many call it a has-been.
Last week Microsoft Network said it had 1 million subscribers, close to Prodigy's 1.4 million to 1.5 million total.
"I have two things going on simultaneously," Mr. Bennett said. "I have a turnaround of an existing infrastructure and a startup. And that is hard."
