Prodigy launches in China

Published on .

Prodigy on Tuesday launched its service in Shanghai, the first of 10 Chinese cities in which it will offer service. Prodigy China, available in Chinese and English, will target businesses, hotels and the consumer market. The service will be marketed by Shanghai Prodigy Telecommunications, a subsidiary of Norinco Group and the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Foreign Relations and Trade.

Prodigy China will cost about $32 for 30 hours. Information contained on the service will be restricted under rules imposed by the Chinese government. Officials there have blocked access to Web sites considered pornographic or anti-government.

International expansion has been a key for Prodigy, under new ownership since last year. The company also operates Africa Online.
