New publishers at Hearst

Published on .

In the most important move at Hearst Magazines since Cathleen Black took over nearly a year ago, Patricia Haegele, president and general manager of the Newspaper National Network, was tapped to become senior VP and publisher of Good Housekeeping. She succeeds Alan Waxenberg, who will move to senior VP and publisher of another Hearst title, Victoria. Cindy Sperling Spengler, the current Victoria publisher, becomes VP-publisher of House Beautiful. Odd man out in the shakeup is HB Publisher Jeff Burch, who is leaving the company.

Ms. Haegele's name had surfaced on the rumor circuit months ago, but the longtime ally of Ms. Black had denied anything was afoot as recently as last month. In addition to working with Ms. Black at the Newspaper Association of America, which oversaw the formation of the NNN, the two previously worked at Gannett Co.; Ms. Black was president and publisher of USA Today and Ms. Haegele was publisher of USA Weekend. Ms. Haegele takes up her new post Jan. 6. No successor has been named at the NNN.
