First-quarter ad spending up 12.7%--CMR

Competitive Media Reporting released figures that show a first-quarter increase in ad spending of 12.7% over the same period last year - $22.2 billion versus $19.7 billion. Advertising for prescription drugs, investment brokers and Internet-related companies fueled the growth, according to CMR. General Motors Corp. led the way in spending with $669.9 million; Philip Morris Cos. had the largest percent increase at 26.3%. In fast-food, McDonald's Corp. outspent second place Burger King Corp. by 58.7%.
