One-quarter of U.S. males ages 18-34 follow sports on web

NORWALK, Conn. -- More than a quarter of the U.S. male population between ages 18 and 34 follows sports on the Internet at least once a week, according to a new survey by Sponsorship Research International.

The 18-to-34-year-old group is almost twice as likely asolder males to follow the NBA and the NHL, while males35-plus show more interest in Major League Baseball and golf, according to the survey, called "Following Sports on the Web: Who is doing it and what sports are they following?"

Surprisingly perhaps, females are equally likely to log on to a sports Web site to follow the NBA (21.2%) as the NFL (21.1%), according to the survey. The proportion of female Internet sports fans who visit a site to follow Major League Baseball (18.1%) is actually higher than males, (13.7%).

The survey was based on an average of 125 interviews a week, 6,000 for the year conducted by SRI, an independent division of ISL Group, last year.
