Reader's Digest, Meredith in alliance

Reader's Digest Association and Meredith Corp. signed a 16-1/2-year alliance giving RDA access to Meredith's 60 million-name consumer database in the U.S. and permitting RDA to direct market Meredith-branded books, CD-ROMs, videos and tapes under the names Better Homes & Gardens and Ladies Home Journal.

Meredith Book Group President Joseph J. Ward has resigned and the company said it expects to eliminate about 50 positions. Under terms of the agreement, RDA will pay Meredith royalties based on product sales and the use of the Meredith database. Not covered by the agreement is Meredith's retail book publishing operations.
