Colgate-Palmolive Co. later this year will launch its Total toothpaste in the U.S., with an ad campaign from Y&R Advertising, New York. Total, made with anti-bacterial triclosan and marketed in several countries, last week won approval by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. It will be the only toothpaste that can legally claim to prevent gingivitis.

Direct sales sought

in CompUSA PC line

CompUSA will launch this fall its own brand of build-to-order PCs that can be ordered over the Web, by phone or in the retailer's superstores. It will compete with direct sellers Dell Computer Corp. and Gateway 2000; CompUSA's point of difference will be stores' after-sale service.

Hamilton to run

Zenith Media

Richard Hamilton is becoming the new CEO of Cordiant's Zenith Media Services. The former senior VP and North America media director at D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, New York, fills a vacant slot since William Grimes left it last year. Cordiant is planning to split Zenith equally between Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising and Bates Worldwide, both New York, when those two agencies become independent, creating logistical problems for the new Zenith executive.

Schwab search

narrows to two shops

Mendelsohn/Zien, Los Angeles, has dropped out of the bidding on the estimated $5 million account for Charles Schwab & Co.'s online brokerage service. Schwab will hear pitches on July 23 from Blazing Paradigm, San Francisco, and Montgomery North, a proposed San Francisco subsidiary of Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners, New York. Butler, Shine & Stern, Sausalito, Calif., had handled.

Katz goes to Evergreen

and Chancellor

Evergreen Media Corp. and Chancellor Broadcasting said they would jointly acquire media rep Katz Media Group for $155.1 million. Katz represents many Evergreen and Chancellor stations as part of its rep network.

7-Eleven tries

in-store pagers

PageMart Wireless and 7-Eleven are testing the sale of pagers and wireless messaging in convenience stores. PageMart service combined with Motorola Pronto pagers make up the paging product offering in 670-plus stores in Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland. Brickell & Associates, Virginia Beach, Va., handles.

International Investor

goes to Euromoney

Euromoney Publications purchased International Investor Inc., which publishes Institutional Investor, from Walt Disney Co. for $142 million. Despite rumors II and Euromoney would combine into one, Euromoney has decided to keep the two investment titles separate.

J. Walter Thompson USA formed JWT/Entertainment to service the agency's entertainment clients, Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Kids Network, Saban Entertainment and Bandai America. Brian Goldner becomes senior partner-worldwide director, JWT/

A-B can resume Calif. giveaway program

A California judge on July 15 issued a preliminary ruling permitting Anheuser-Busch to resume a halted rewards program. A Los Angeles County superior court permitted the program to continue-even though it broke codes banning giveaways tied to sales of alcohol-because state regulators failed to enforce promotion laws consistently in the past. The state's alcoholic beverage control department had obtained a temporary restraining order two weeks earlier. Both sides last week were awaiting another court order that would clarify, or possibly modify, the judge's position.

Tiger Woods stars

in U.K. AmEx campaign

American Express Co. has begun an ad campaign timed to last week's British Open at Royal Troon in Scotland and featuring U.S. golfing phenomenon Tiger Woods. The campaign from Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide, New York, is an extension of a sponsorship agreement with this year's Masters champion.

Kinko's, Virgin team up

for joint venture in Europe

Kinko's and Virgin Group have formed a joint venture that paves the way for the opening of Kinko's photocopying and business services outlets in the U.K. and France, starting early next year. Kevin Griffiths, director of information technology services for Virgin Group, will be managing director of the new stores.
