[New York] C. Speed Veal, 78, retired VP-advertising of Prudential Insurance Co. of America, who helped develop the famed "Piece of the rock" campaign, died May 4.

Mr. Veal joined Prudential in 1954 as director of public relations in its Jacksonville, Fla., office. He was promoted to corporate director of community affairs in 1967 and relocated to Prudential's Newark, N.J., headquarters where he later was named director of advertising and then VP-advertising.
