Rock to leave Olds

General Motors' John Rock, the flamboyant, VP-general manager of Oldsmobile, will retire after 36 years with the carmaker. Industry watchers were surprised because it was believed Mr. Rock had planned to stay with the division through its centennial in 1997. He'll stay through the end of the year, working on the transition with his successor, Darwin Clark, now VP-sales, marketing and aftersales of GM Europe.

"John will be missed at General Motors ... his dedicated leadership has played a key role in supporting GM's North American Operations turn-around over the past several years," said Ronald Zarrella, VP-group executive, sales, service and marketing at GM's North American Operations.
