Rubin Postaer & Associates, Santa Monica, Calif., is in the final stages of negotiations to purchase Marina del Rey independent agency Blackboard. Rubin, with billings of $800 million, has Honda Motor Co. as its primary client and handles both the Honda and Acura accounts. Clients at Blackboard include Kirin beer and K-Swiss. Blackboard, with revenue of about $3 million, is the new name launched this spring for Houston Helm Fattal & Collins, itself a combination of two small Los Angeles shops. Purchase of the agency is "under study," confirmed Gerry Rubin, president-CEO of Rubin Postaer, though he added his shop isn't necessarily seeking to grow through acquisition. "We're nowhere the Martin Sorrell type," he said, referring to the acquisitive chief executive of WPP Group.
