Samsung to sponsor China in Sydney Olympics

Published on .

MANILA--Samsung Electronics has agreed to sponsor China during the Sydney Olympic games next year as part of its global marketing campaign for its "Anycall" mobile phones, according to a Samsung Philippinesofficial.

Under the agreement, Samsung will give China's national team $240,000 in cash plus a supply of its "Anycall" mobile phones. In return, Samsung will have rights to use emblems of the Chinese national Olympic team on its products and ads.

The official says Samsung chose China because the country "has the most potential for mobile phones." He noted that China currently has 36 million mobile phone users, which is expected to grow to 100 million by 2003. Samsung will also launch an aggressive sales campaign during the Sydney games.
