SBC to acquire PacTel

Published on .

SBC Communications, San Antonio, Texas, plans to acquire Pacific Telesis Group; it will be the first merger between two former Bell System companies.

The combined company will include Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell, Nevada Bell and Cellular One. The two companies said the combined organization will be the nation's second-largest telecommunications company with revenues of more than $21 billion.

D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, St. Louis, is primary agency for SBC. Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco, is main agency for Pacific Telesis, with BBDO West, Los Angeles, handling one division. Pacific Telesis' Pacific Bell, meanwhile, just began a review for a new $40 million-to-$70 million long-distance account (AA, April 1) and this week is expected to finish a $20 million review for a new mobile services account.
