BONN -- DeTeMobil, the mobile phone subsidiary of Telekom, has awarded Hamburg- based Scholz & Friends its $30-40 million umbrella advertising account and its product business, probably worth an additional $30 million.

It's unclear how much business remains with incumbent Springer & Jacoby, Hamburg, who also pitched for both accounts, but last year DeTeMobil spent $84 million. S&J's contract runs through 1999.

Also competing were Telekom's incumbent agency SEA Spiess Ermisch Andere and Munichbased creative newcomer Dornier Wetzel v. Buren.

Scholz & Friends has wide experience in the mobile phones market, having handled rival Mannesmann Mobilfunk's business for several years. Mannesmann Mobilfunk D2 is the market leader in Germany, but DeTeMobil is piling on the pressure with recent tariff reductions as part of a recruitment drive.
