Sears' Don Hamblen Promoted to VP-CMO

Former VP-Marketing Planning at Retailer Held Positions at P&G, Payless

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Sears, Roebuck & Co. has tapped an internal candidate as its new chief marketing officer. Don Hamblen will take on the role of VP-CMO, after serving two years as VP-marketing planning for the retailer.

Mr. Hamblen will report to Richard Gerstein, who held the position before his promotion to CMO of Sears Holdings last month. Prior to joining Sears Holdings, Mr. Hamblen held marketing positions at Payless ShoeSource, Monsanto, LensCrafters and Procter & Gamble.

The appointment fills out Sears Holdings' marketing roster, which had been in flux throughout the summer. Kmart's chief marketing officer, Bill Stewart, departed in June and was replaced by Mark Snyder last week. Maureen McGuire, CMO of Sears Holdings, left the retailer in August.

Sears, Roebuck & Co. has struggled as of late, posting a 9.8% sales decline at stores open at least a year during the first quarter and a 6.7% slide during the second quarter. The retailer, however, has received praise from industry watchers for its creative marketing. During the back-to-school season, Sears, Roebuck & Co. launched a digital program that included just about every youth-focused social, virtual and entertainment network out there.
