Senate stage set for tobacco vote

Published on .

The fate of the Senate tobacco bill could be decided today. After Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R., Miss.) held a meeting among Senate Republicans this morning, several GOP senators said a critical vote could be taken this afternoon on cutting off debate on the bill or waiving a point of order claiming the tobacco bill's spending is not in the budget and thus illegal. The vote would determine whether the Senate leadership allows debate on the bill to continue or pulls the measure off the floor.
