SENATE TO VOTE ON LIMITING MARKETERS' ACCESS TO STUDENTS

(May 18, 2001) -- The U.S Senate, considering a major education bill, is expected to vote next week on an amendment that could limit information schools could provide to marketers.

Sponsored by U.S. Sens. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., and Richard C. Shelby, R-Ala., and backed by Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y, the Student Privacy Protection Act would require school districts to get parents permission before giving any information to marketers, even if individual students are not identified.

The Association of National Advertising has sent senators a letter opposing the legislation. -- Ira Teinowitz
