SGI chief exits

Silicon Graphics said embattled Chairman-CEO Edward McCracken resigned Oct. 29. Mr. McCracken, whose departure has been rumored in recent days, will stay on till SGI picks a new chief. Gary L. Lauer resigned as SGI's exec VP-worldwide field operations. Robert H. Ewald, exec VP-computer systems, will serve as acting chief operating officer. The troubled business computer maker also said it will cut 700 to 1,000 jobs worldwide this quarter, resulting in about a $50 million charge against earnings. SGI recently began a campaign from its new agency, CKS Partners, Cupertino, Calif.
