Shiseido, Merrill Lynch announce global sponsorship of CNN's millennium coverage

HONG KONG--Japanese cosmetics giant Shiseido Co. and U.S.-based financial services marketer Merrill Lynch & Co. have signed on to become the first global sponsors for Millennium 2000, CNN's worldwide coverage of the millennium celebrations. In addition, Agilent and Taiwanese computer marketer Acer have signed on as regional sponsors.

"We are delighted to announce this sponsorship, which is a prime example of how CNN is able to support leading marketers like Shiseido and Merrill Lynch to reach our worldwide audience," said David Levy, president-international advertising sales, Turner Broadcasting System.

During CNN's extensive millennium coverage between Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, 2000, Shiseido and Merrill Lynch advertisements and millennium greetings will air in the form of TV spots and sponsorship billboards on CNN in the U.S. as well as on CNN International's Asia Pacific, Europe/Africa/Middle East and Latin America feeds.

Agilent's advertisements will air on CNN International's Asia-Pacific and Europe/Africa/Middle East feeds. Acer's spots will be broadcast on the network's Asia-Pacific and Latin America feeds.

CNN's Millennium 2000 will provide 100 hours of global news coverage of millennium-related events and turn-of-the-century issues. Almost 60 CNN correspondents will be positioned at key locations around the world to provide live coverage of worldwide millennium celebrations, including the Chatham Islands in New Zealand, the pyramids of Egypt, Times Square in New York and the "Hollywood" sign in Los Angeles. CNN will also be positioned to cover any Year 2000 bug disruptions around the world.
