HKM comedy-commercials director Michael Patrick Jann has gone from The State to the state of Minnesota. He's parlayed a reel of funny :30s and his credentials as one of the founders of the college comedy troupe The State, which had a series on MTV at one time, into his first features directing job -- at the age of 28. Currently shooting on location in the Land of Lakes, he describes the movie, Dairy Queens, as a "very dark comedy" about the Miss Teen Minnesota Pageant. No shoestring production, it's a New Line Cinema film scheduled for release in spring '99, and it stars the likes of Kirstie Alley, Kirsten Dunst and Ellen Barkin.
