LOS ANGELES -- Sky Entertainment Services has won exclusive direct-to-home broadcast rights to several high profile sporting events as well as a performance by opera singer Luciano Pavarotti for its Latin American operation. The alliance, which runs the service, is claiming its combined ability to obtain such rights puts it at the forefront of programming in the region.

"Our live broadcasts of the Brazilian Soccer Championship and the Tyson-Holyfield fight, coupled with Luciano Pavarotti's concert, proves the prowess of our joint venture in obtaining first-rate programming that can only be found on Sky," says David Evans, chief executive officer of Sky Entertainment Services Latin America.

Sky Entertainment Services is the brand name for the Latin American DTH service offered by the alliance of: Organizacoes Globo, the Brazilian entertainment group; Grupo Televisa, the largest production and media company in the Spanish-speaking world; News Corporation Ltd and Tele-Communications International Inc (trading name TINTA), a communications and media company.

Sky officially launched in Brazil on October 30 last year and in Mexico on December 15, 1996.
