Sky overtakes DTH rival in Mexico

MEXICO CITY -- Sky Mexico has pulled ahead in the DTH race, with more than 100,000 activated subscribers at year-end 1997.

Sky Mexico took out full-page newspaper ads on January 12 that stated it had exceeded the 100,000 mark as of December 26. However, it did not publish an exact count and the company did not provide additional information.

Galaxy Mexico did not respond to requests for year- end subscriber figures. An independent, third party confirmed that Sky Mexico has overtaken Galaxy's DirecTV lead in terms of subscribers, but declined to provide statistics.

Galaxy's DirecTV, which launched in the Mexican market sooner, had been the leading provider of DTH television. Sky Mexico took aim at DirecTV's lead in November, when it slashed prices to levels in line with its rival.
