Sky PerfecTV outsources customer services in Japan

TOKYO--Leading Japanese direct-to-home satellite platform Sky PerfecTV has set up a joint venture with major telecom carrier NTT East Co. to provide interactive and Internet services as well as manage subscriber services.

The venture is part of Sky PerfecTV's efforts to cut costs by outsourcing some of its operations. Data Network Center Corp. is 51% owned by Sky PerfecTV, with NTT East, the largest local telecom carrier in Japan, holding a 49% stake. The company, capitalized at $3.7 million, will tally costs for customers' use of Sky PerfecTV services, as well as handle calls and other telecom and Internet-related services.

It will also support services for a new broadcast and communications satellite set to start broadcasting next summer.

The two companies linked up last December to study the potential of a joint venture, which they said at the time NTT Data Corp. was also considering.
