Statistical Research Inc., Westfield, N.J., is shutting down its Smart TV audience measuring project, which was a potential competitor to Nielsen Media Research. "While it is obviously disappointing that the necessary funding for a national rollout has not been forthcoming, SRI is still pursuing options and remains ready to serve the industry,'' company President Gale Metzger said in a prepared statement. In the end, SRI was asking the four major broadcast networks to ante up about $12 million each to fund the rollout, money the networks would have gotten back in future services. Smart had received about $30 million in funding from the networks since 1994.
