Sony Computer to launch PlayStation Web sites

TOKYO--Sony Computer Entertainment will set up Internet marketingsites for its PlayStation video-game consoles prior to its next-generationPlayStation 2 machine hitting store shelves in Japan.

The Japanese site, called PlayStation.com Japan, will launch in Japan onFeb. 1, ahead of the March 4 scheduled release date for the 128-bit PlayStation 2. The site will start sales in mid-February of PlayStation andPlayStation 2 consoles and related materials, such as games.

Sony Computer, a division of Sony Corp., will set up similar sites in North America and Europe but hasn't announced the time frames. By 2001, Sony Computer is aiming to make the sites full-scale e-commerce spots that will offer online music distribution, DVD sales and a variety of other entertainment products, according to a spokesman.
