Sony links with Sky PerfecTV to sell music online

Published on .

TOKYO--Sony is preparing to launch a satellite-based music content distribution business. The effort will be driven by Sony Music Entertainment (SME) in conjunction with Tokyo-based Sky PerfecTV, a satellite TV company in which Sony is the leading shareholder. The Sony music content will be distributed by Sky PerfecTV's satellite network.

The new business will enable subscribers to download and record digital-quality music files of their choice at low prices, according to Sony. Digital Media Entertainment, another Sony subsidiary, will be responsible for the actual content distribution. The group hopes to start offering a commercial version of the service in July and plans to offer content at prices that undercut music CDs.
