The three-year multimillion-dollar deal includes the creation of a Sony on My Yahoo! site for consumers seeking information on Sony consumer electronics products and services. SonyStyle.com, Sony's shopping site, will receive top billing on Yahoo! Shopping.
Yahoo! will help Sony integrate the content, products and services offered by its various business groups for the Sony U.S. Group Portal. These include Screenblast, SonyStyle.com, Sony online games and ImageStation.com, a digital photo service. Sony's PressPlay online music service is already offered on Yahoo! The online giant will also help Sony conduct data mining and audience targeting and measurement to improve its customer relationship management and retention activities.
There is, however, one missing piece in the deal -- the online activities of Sony Computer Entertainment's PlayStation console business. Sony Corp. of America Chairman-CEO Howard Stringer said Sony Entertainment has a non-exclusive relationship with AOL Time Warner's America Online and that eventually Sony would bring the PlayStation business into the Yahoo! fold.
Sony's movie business, Sony Pictures Entertainment, will also receive promotional support on Yahoo! for the upcoming films Ali, The Panic Room and Deeds.
"Working with Yahoo! will open up new digital avenues for us," Mr. Stringer said today during a conference call.
