CHICAGO ( -- For the first time in the 72-year history of the Direct Marketing Association's Echo Awards, the number of entries from international agencies surpassed the number from the U.S. -- 571 to 551.

The competition is designed to recognize the year's best agency efforts in direct and interactive marketing.

The top prize, the Diamond Echo, went to CP Comunicacion Proximity, Barcelona, for its direct-mail campaign for Sony Espana.

Other winners included Russ Reid Co., Pasadena, Calif., which received the U.S. Postal Service Gold Echo for the best use of direct mail for its donation solicitation piece for the Denver Rescue Mission; Interpublic Group of Cos.' McCann WorldGroup's McCann Relationship Marketing, New York, which won the Henry Hoke Echo for its multimedia direct-response campaign for the Michael J. Fox Foundation; Digital Impact, San Mateo, Calif., which took home the Echo Digital Award for its interactive campaign for; and Interpublic's Foote, Cone & Belding Worldwide's FCBi. Chicago, which received the Royal Mail Millennium Award for the best integrated campaign for John Deere.
