Spanish Web site El Sitio opens Mexican office

BUENOS AIRES--El Sitio International Corp., an Argentine operator of a network of local content Web sites in Latin America, is opening a Mexico City office as part of its plan to offer Spanish-and Portuguese-language Internet access throughout the Americas.

The El Sitio network ( and provides country-specific content, connectivity and services targeting Spanish and Portuguese-speaking audiences in the countries of Latin America, the U.S. and elsewhere.

The Mexico City office will house an editorial team charged with generating local content. El Sitio is organized into channels or subject areas, including community, games, relationships, technology, news, weather, sports, film, music and culture.

The El Sitio network, which has 325,000 registered users, currently features specific contents for Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Mexico and plans to launch its U.S. Web site in September.

El Sitio will compete in Mexico with the recently launched Internet gateway, which is controlled by the same family that runs TV Azteca, Mexico's second largest broadcaster.

Other major players in the Latin American Internet market include Star-Media, America Online, Microsoft Corp. and Prodigy Communications Corp.
