The new office will be responsible for product development and design, and will lead all strategic decisions for the region. Sales and advertising management as well as financial operations will be based in Montevideo.
"We needed a geographically convenient place to make business in the entire region," says Fernando Espuelas, chairman of StarMedia.
Uruguay is strategically sandwiched between the two regional super-powers, Brazil and Argentina.
StarMedia will strengthen its launch strategy in Uruguay by sponsoring the tennis competition "StarMedia SeniorCup", scheduled to take place in the first week of February 2000 in the city of Punta del Este.
