(Aug. 13, 2001) -- Stephen Harty, president and partner of Omnicom Group's Merkley Newman Harty & Partners, announced Aug. 10 his plans to leave the Manhattan-based agency.

Mr. Harty, 49, left WPP Group's Ogilvy & Mather in April 1993 after 12 years to start Merkley Newman Harty with chairman Parry Merkley, also from Ogilvy. Janet Newman, another founding partner, retired from the agency in 1998.

Mr. Merkley will continue to lead the firm, whose major clients include Mercedes Benz U.S.A, BellSouth and Citigroup, along with Alex Gellert, managing director/partner, and Anne Devereux, general manager and MNH Healthworks president.

No plans exist to name a successor to Mr. Harty. As for Mr. Harty, he said, "My plan is to have no plan." -- Lisa Sanders
