STEVENSON GETS NBA POST SPORTS EXEC WILL HEAD MARKETING; SCHREFF BELIEVED HEADED TO MARVEL

NBA Properties, the marketing arm of the National Basketball Association, this week will name Gary Stevenson president of its marketing and media group.

He will succeed David Schreff, who has left NBA Properties and is believed to be heading to Marvel Entertainment Group as president and chief operating officer.

CONSULTANT ON WOMEN'S LEAGUE

Mr. Stevenson has served since February as a consultant for the NBA on the development and launch of the Women's National Basketball Association.

NBA Properties wouldn't comment. Marvel and Messrs. Schreff and Stevenson didn't return phone calls.

MARKETING TO MEDIA SALES

Mr. Stevenson will oversee marketing, sponsorship and media sales for the NBA, the WNBA and USA Basketball, whose marketing NBA Properties handles. He will report to Rick Welts, exec VP-chief marketing officer at the NBA and president of NBA Properties.

Mr. Stevenson was chief operating officer at the Golf Channel from 1994 to 1995. Before that, he was a senior marketing executive at the PGA Tour from 1987 to 1994. He also has been VP-marketing and sales at Advantage International, a prominent sports marketing company.

MARVEL'S EVOLUTION

If Mr. Schreff is indeed headed for Marvel, it would continue the company's recent and quite rapid evolution from a publisher of comic books to a diverse youth entertainment marketer.

Marvel now licenses such characters as Spider-Man and the X-Men to advertisers for integrated marketing programs, much in the same way NBA Properties leverages sports assets and content for sponsors.
