Strong Buick sales take GM by surprise in China

BEIJING--Shanghai General Motors is to double its production of Buicks in2000 in an effort to meet the unexpectedly high orders for its mid-sizecars. The joint venture between U.S.-based General Motors Corp. andShanghai Automotive Industry Corp. is increasing 2000 production levelsfrom 37,000 to 50,000 cars, according to a report in China Daily.Production in 1999 is expected to reach 23,000 Buicks. Since May, when themodel was introduced, Shanghai GM has received more than 20,000 orders, aquarter more than expected.
