The number of U.S. Internet users has risen to 83 million, according to IntelliQuest Research, Chicago. That's 40% of the U.S. population age 16 or older, up from 66 million during the same quarter last year. In addition, 3.7 million users now use a handheld computer and 3.1 million use a TV set-top box or WebTV to access the Internet instead of PCs, IntelliQuest found.
