Survey finds 5.8 million 'net users

Published on .

Nearly 6 million U.S. adults have direct Internet access from work or home, according to a survey of released Tuesday by O'Reilly & Associates and Trish Information Services. Additionally, 67% of those with direct access are male, and over half are between 18 and 34. Median household income is between $50,000 and $75,000.

O'Reilly did not count U.S. adults who have access to the Internet through commercial online services in its total figure, meaning the number of people on the 'net is likely 1 million or more greater.

The results are based on telephone surveys with 1,000 Internet users and 500 commercial online service subscribers conducted between May and August. Details of the survey are posted on O'Reilly's Web site.
