Preliminary overnight numbers for the Aug. 23 "Survivor'' finale on CBS were impressive. Nielsen Media Research reported a national 28.2 rating and 44 share, with an estimated 51 million viewers during the 8 to 10 p.m. ET slot. According to a spokesman at Nielsen, this puts the show close to the top 10 in most highly watched shows of all time (which boast ratings of at least 30). By comparison, 75 million viewers watched the finale of "Seinfeld.'' For the New York TV market, CBSResearch.com posted an overnight Nielsen local market rating/share of 30.8/45 for the finale. The "Survivor Reunion'' show, which aired from 10 to 11 p.m. ET, scored a 23.4/37 in New York.
