AT&T tries Chicago

Illinois Commerce Commission has OK'd AT&T Corp. to offer local telephone service in the Chicago area. AT&T is currently negotiating with Ameritech on a price for reselling its switches. AT&T is also authorized to offer service in cities in California, Connecticut, Michigan and New York. AT&T recently appointed directors of five regional offices (called Local Service Organizations) to spearhead local marketing and sales efforts across the country. Details are still being worked out as AT&T awaits pending telecommunications legislation currently under negotiation in Congress that would allow long-distance providers to begin offering local service.

BellSouth PCS names agency
BellSouth Personal Communications to Interpublic Group's Long Haymes Carr Lintas, Winston-Salem, N.C., for its estimated $5 million account. BellSouth PCS will next year launch its wireless communications service in North and South Carolina and Tennessee.
