The top marketing executive at AT&T Corp. has stepped down. Stephen Graham, who topped Advertising Age
's Power 50 list in 1999, resigned as VP-marketing communications worldwide to pursue other interests. His departure, which had been rumored, comes three months after H. Eugene Lockhart stepped down as president of AT&T's consumer division. Mr. Graham, who oversaw a $650 million ad budget, was known to be actively agitating for change within AT&T and had sought a more empowered position as chief marketing officer. AT&T Chairman C. Michael Armstrong has been cleaning house as part of a series of cost-cutting moves at the telecommunications giant. Mr. Graham said that "AT&T is a great company and a great brand with great leadership . . . I wish everyone there great success." Succeeding Mr. Graham at AT&T, effective immediately with the title of director of marketing communications for the consumer division, is Cathy Constable, formerly a marketing communications division manager. Ms. Constable joined AT&T last year; earlier, she worked at Saatchi & Saatchi for 14 years and was exec VP-core group director with responsibility for global brands. Mr. Graham joined AT&T in 1996 and was responsible for its advertising, direct mail, online communications and sponsorships.
