Taiwan's Acer to enter India's basic PC market

BOMBAY--Taiwanese computer marketer Acer's Indian joint venture will next monthlaunch a basic PC as part of a plan to enter the low end of the market inIndia

Bangalore-based Wipro Acer, a 50-50 joint venture between the $5.8 billionAcer of Taiwan and IT marketer Wipro Corp., will introduce its AcerBasic model,priced in Taiwan at $500. Due to Indian import duties, the PC will retail for$850 in India.

Although not a network computer, currently the hot topic among PC marketers,the AcerBasic is almost frills-free.

Acer entered the home PC segment in India in May with its multimedia upscaleAspire model, priced at $4,400. IBM Corp. estimates an overall 20,000 PCs weresold last year in the local home segment. Future launches include AcerEden, amultimedia PC for the home, and KidsPC, aimed at children aged between two andfive years.
